Marcia Matthews is a well-established writer and poet. She has had her poetry published in the Hawaii Review, Sojourner, and A Wise Woman’s Garden. Her journalism has been printed in The Belmont Citizen-Herald, The TAB, Equal Times, and Newburyport Daily News. Marcia was also cited in Take Back the Night, published by William Morrow in 1980.
Marcia is the co-author of Fight Back (Cleis Press, 1981) and written a YA novel entitled Hippieville that was published in 2013.
When not writing, Marcia enjoys reading historical fiction but has always enjoyed writing, starting at age six 6 years old when she printed her first book in pencil. She also won money for her 8th grade essay being the best. Graduating cum laude from University of New Hampshire with an English degree, Marcia also enjoys gardening, travelling, and doing video production. Her favorite authors are Robert Louis Stevenson, Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, Jane Austen, and Charlotte Bronte.
Ben is her favorite character so far because he is the anti-hero of Hippieville, where the story is about a bad boy reforming for love, but this rock god falls from his pedestal when the victimized young girl turns the tables on him. Marcia would cast Jesse Kinch as Ben, and Sarah Hyland as Leda if Hippieville hits the big screen.
Marcia is systematic in her writing process. She likes to get some chapters written in the mornings, read things over, makes revisions, and then brings her writings to her trusted critique group. She knows this group is reliable and give plenty of feedback. If ever, Marcia gets stumped with writer’s block, working out or dancing can help her creativity get back on track.
